What is WaveCel:

WaveCel is a collapsible cellular material that lines the inside of Bontrager WaveCel helmets.

It is the result of a four-year collaboration between the Trek research and design teams, orthopaedic surgeon Steve Madey and biomechanical engineer Michael Bottlang. Doctors Madey and Bottlang have worked together for the past 25 years as pioneers in treating fractures, chest and pelvic trauma, and preventing head injuries. They receive funding from the National Institute of Health to prevent brain injuries among cyclists.

How it works:

Unlike conventional foam helmets, designed to protect against direct impacts, WaveCel takes into account how most cycling accidents occur: in an uncontrolled way, with twisting, bending and angled impacts.

WaveCel absorbs energy in several ways. On impact, the layers of WaveCel material move independently and flex until the cell walls compress and slide, absorbing direct and rotational energy and diverting it away from the head.

This three-stage change in the material's structure (flexing, compression, sliding) is remarkably effective at dispersing impact energy. WaveCel prevents concussions in typical cycling accidents almost 99 times out of 100.*

*Results based on AIS 2 Injury (BriC) tests at 6,2 m/s at an angle of 45°, comparing a standard EPS helmet with the same helmet modified with a WaveCel insert, as detailed in the paper "Comparison of Bicycle Helmet Technology in Realistic Oblique Impacts". WaveCel Helmet Range:

WaveCel represents a revolutionary innovation in the aftermarket category, which has remained largely unchanged over the past 30 years. A step that underlines Trek's commitment to making cycling safer for all riders.
