The new Scorpion MTB tyres challenge current conventions, offering a high-performance tyre for every type of terrain, with different designs for every riding style. The innovative SmartGrip Compound, the technological heart of the new tyres, ensures mechanical strength and grip on dry or wet terrain.
Pirelli's off-road tyre is called Scorpion MTB (a company trademark) for a reason. As with PZero Velo, the road tyres that marked Pirelli's return to cycling, a meaningful name was also chosen for the MTB tyres. Scorpion tyres are Pirelli's long-established motocross tyres, with which the company has won over 70 world titles MX Like all Pirelli bicycle tyres, the new MTB tyre range was developed at Pirelli's innovation centre, the R&D laboratories in Milan Bicocca: the main centre among Pirelli's 11 research centres worldwide, which, with over 1000 dedicated researchers, allocates around 200 million euros each year to tyre development and innovation. SmartGrip Compound, the heart of the new tyres, was produced at Pirelli's Racing facilities, where the compounds for the well-known F1 tyres are also engineered.
Each size has its own dedicated development
Pirelli's extensive experience gained through years in motocross was put to use, particularly in defining the tread patterns of the Scorpion MTB range: tread block shape and height, spacing, Cross-link and angles were studied for maximum contact patch efficiency on the specific riding surfaces. When designing the new tyres around terrain consistency, Pirelli's engineers also had to consider many other variables, from the rider's riding style to the latest developments in rim profiles and sizes. For this reason, construction technology in the new Scorpion MTB tyres is not the same across all tyre sizes: each size benefits from dedicated development. The combination and interaction of structures, reinforcements, the compound's static and dynamic properties, sizes and different patterns for different terrains represented a technical area of innovation for Pirelli in its approach to product development. In keeping with Pirelli's DNA, which places consumers' specific needs at the centre of all its product development, the Scorpion MTB range allows riders to freely choose the size best suited to their riding style, without fear of compromising performance.
Features
- Scorpion M tyres (Mixed Terrain - yellow) are ideal for mixed terrain, where changes can be unpredictable or sudden, from hardpack to sand, rocks and roots.
- Lite: this is the lightest Mixed version, with even lower rolling resistance.
- Grip: SmartGrip Compound for uncompromising grip on dry and wet surfaces.
- Handling: a model designed to be compatible with modern wide-profile rims.
- Damping: 120 Tpi Tubeless ready casing for greater stability and grip with a modern, low-pressure riding style.
- Protection: tear-resistant compound offering superior puncture resistance and balanced protection without compromising performance.
Technology
SmartGrip Compound: dry and wet grip without loss of performance
At the heart of Pirelli's MTB tyre technology is the innovative SmartGrip Compound. Thanks to this specific compound, weather does not affect the performance of the new tyres, which were designed to offer grip and handling in all weather conditions. Just as SmartNettm Silica resolved the trade-off between rolling resistance and wet grip in PZero Velo road tyres, SmartGrip Compound closes the gap between tear resistance and grip on wet surfaces in Scorpion MTB tyres.
